How to Get Rid of an Old Mattress in Phoenix, AZ

By Ryan Doyle · DoyleDoes LLC · Phoenix Valley, AZ

Old mattresses are one of the most awkward things to get rid of. They're too big to fit in your car, the city won't always take them at the curb, and most donation centers have stopped accepting them. Here's a straight rundown of your actual options in Phoenix.

Option 1: Hire a Junk Removal Company (Easiest)

Call DoyleDoes. We'll come out, pull the mattress out of your house or wherever it is, and haul it away — same-day or next-day. A single mattress pickup runs $75–$125 depending on if you're adding other items. Add a box spring and it barely changes the price.

This is the easiest option by far. You don't have to touch it, move it, or figure out where it goes.

Option 2: Mattress Retailer Haul-Away

If you're buying a new mattress, most retailers (Mattress Firm, Tempur-Pedic, even some big box stores) will haul away your old one for free or a small fee when they deliver the new one. Ask when you buy — it's usually a checkbox at checkout you might have missed.

Option 3: Donate It (If It's in Good Shape)

Most Phoenix thrift stores and donation centers won't take mattresses due to health regulations. However, a few organizations do:

If your mattress is stained, torn, or over 7–8 years old, most places won't take it. Be honest with yourself about its condition before trying to donate.

Option 4: City Bulk Pickup

Phoenix, Chandler, Gilbert, and most Valley cities offer bulk item pickup — but it's usually scheduled, not on-demand, and there are limits on what they'll accept. Check your city's website for bulk pickup scheduling. Wait times can be a week or more.

Option 5: Mattress Recycling

Mattresses are actually highly recyclable — the foam, springs, and fabric can all be processed. The Mattress Recycling Council runs a program called Bye Bye Mattress with drop-off locations in Arizona. Search their site for the closest location to you. There may be a small fee.

What NOT to Do

Don't leave it on the curb without scheduling a bulk pickup — you can get fined in most HOA communities and many cities. Don't try to fit it in your trunk. And definitely don't cut it up yourself — it's a mess and not worth the effort.
